Frequently asked questions

  • What is blast-resistant glass?

Blast-resistant glass is a category of security glass that offers protection in the event of an explosion.

This type of glass has two primary functions. First, it should maintain structural integrity if subjected to an explosive shockwave. Second, it serves to protect people and property from flying glass shards – one of the leading causes of injury from bomb blasts and accidental explosions.

Blast-resistant glass is sometimes known as "bomb-proof glass" or "blast-proof glass". However, these names are not strictly accurate as no type of glass offers 100% protection from blasts.

  • What is blast-resistant glass made of?

Blast-resistant glass is similar in construction to laminated safety glass. It consists of several glass (or polycarbonate) layers, fixed together with polymer interlayers.

What distinguishes blast-resistant glass is the combination of materials used. It incorporates a mixture of hard and soft layers to ensure that the glass can flex under the force of an explosive blast.

Anti-explosion glass typically includes more glass layers and thicker interlayers than standard safety glass. Its overall thickness varies depending on the level of blast resistance required.
